Q: What is asthma?
A: Asthma is an incurable chronic disease. When you have asthma, the air passages in your lungs are
very sensitive and can be inflamed and swollen.

Q: What is an asthma attack?
A: An attack occurs when the lungs react to triggers in the environment that cause them to constrict
the lung passages making it difficult to breathe.

Q: What are some triggers?
A: Triggers for an each asthma sufferer can be different. However some of the most common triggers
are pollen, dust mites, mold, animals, cockroaches, colds and viruses, emotional responses, exercise or
other physical exertions, medications, and smoke.

Q: When can asthma appear?
A: Asthma appears most commonly in childhood, affecting a percentage of 7-10% of children.

Q: Are males or females more prone to Asthma?
A: In childhood, boys are twice as likely to develop asthma; as teenagers’ girls are more likely and in
adulthood, the ratio is 1:1.

Q: Can asthma be life threatening?
A: Yes. There are still deaths every year in both children and adults. More importantly there has been
an incline every year since the 1970’s of asthma deaths.

Q: How common is asthma in America?
A: Asthma affects approximately 17 million in the United States annually. Including 10-12% of children
under the age of 18.
